Hey there! In this post you are going to see how to install vSphere Update Manager and configure that with the VCSA 6. I have a Windows 2008R2 machine up and running and i have the vCenter Windows Installation ISO mounted on it. Let the Autorun.exe start and it should show you the below screen.
From the vSphere Update Manager on the left side, select Server, check the little check box on the right side to install SQL Server 2012 as the embedded database for VUM and click on Install. If you have an external database, just click install and you can configure the database later.
Once the DB is installed, vSphere Update Manager starts installing. Dot Net 3.5 SP1 is the prerequisite for the Update Manager to install. If not installed already, installer will start installing it.
On the next screen provide the vCenter details, username and password of user account designated to run Update Manager Service. Make sure necessary permissions are granted to this account on vCenter Server.
Enter the VUM details on the next screen, verify the port numbers and modify if needed and click Next.
Once done, click on Install on the next Screen. Once Installation is done after couple of screens, hit Finish.
Once done with the installation. Logout and login back to the vSphere Web Client to find the Update Manager plugin added under the Monitoring section.
You should be able to manage all the baselines and settings from the Update Manager screen.
Note that Download Service cannot be installed on the same server as vSphere Update Manager, this is because of the fact that Download Service is implemented when there is no Internet connection on the vSphere Update Manager. If there is internet connection available on VUM server, it should already be ready to download the updates for you.
Hope this was informative. Thanks!
